Śaṅkara was an influential teacher of Advaita Vedānta, generally placed in the eighth century. His surviving commentaries interpret the Upaniṣads, Bhagavad Gītā and Brahmasūtras through a nondual understanding of reality and the Self.
This collection brings together eight complete devotional readings, each with its Sanskrit text, section numbers, original English meaning, a relevant image and an edition note.
Traditional depiction by Ravi Varma Press, c. 1904. A devotional image made many centuries later, not a lifetime portrait.
EIGHT COMPLETE READINGS
Shlokas, hymns and teaching poems
The six new editions follow volume 18 of the 1910 Sri Vani Vilas collection. Kalabhairava Ashtakam and Nirvana Shatakam retain their own documented historical witnesses.
31 VERSES · GOVINDA
Bhaja Govindam
A direct teaching poem on mortality, detachment, companionship and remembrance of Govinda. Its familiar encounter with an elderly grammarian belongs to the traditional story surrounding the work.
The Sanskrit editions are freshly prepared from cited historical witnesses. English meanings are original DHIH prose. They explain the selected reading without claiming to replace a word-by-word commentary or scholarly critical edition.
